Far too many of us are putting off til tomorrow what we COULD, and I daresay should, be doing today.
If I had a dollar for everytime I overhear someone talking about how happy they are going to be when…(fill in the blank)…when they get the promotion, when they buy the new house, after the wedding is over, when the divorce is final, when the economy comes back around, when they lose 10 pounds, etc etc. I would be able to buy a private island somewhere tropical and fabulous.
This is flawed thinking at its finest, however. The belief that the future holds the potential for happiness and prosperity more than THIS moment does. Not true.
The truth is this: the future does not exist. Neither does the past. You can’t take the train to either place.
The past is gone. You kept some memories, sure. You learned a thing or too, definitely. But you can’t go back.
The future is still on its way. If you think of The Future, you are engaged in a fantasy. A daydream. A projection.
And guess what else?
All that reminiscing and fantasizing…is HAPPENING RIGHT NOW. The fact is, this very moment is the sum total of your entire life. This breath you are taking right now as you are reading this (and for me, as I am writing to you) is all there is. Sure, I’m going to finish this and move on to the next thing on my list and I will do my best to stay present during each task and remember that I asked for all of it. The fact that I’m sitting in Malibu writing this to you after an early morning drive through scenic Topanga Canyon is all based on my decisions to live my life surrounded by beauty and making a difference in the world with my words. I would rather tilt my head a little to the right, squint a bit, and see the stars aligned the way I desire them to instead of staring fixedly ahead and waiting.
I was just chatting with 60-something year old Asian man who was trained in mathematics and now works in Research and Development on natural gas pipelines. I told him about my career as a Life Coach. He took a sip of coffee, thought for a moment, and decided that most people were not very flexible in their lives. Most people could use some help in seeing things more positively.
Exactly. Yes. And that is my FULL INTENT and deepest desire in life. To help others create happy, healthy lifestyles. To be mindful. To be present. To enjoy LIFE by shifting the way we SEE the moment and what we CHOOSE to believe each day.
My reminder for you is this: life is now.
And so don’t worry about the stars aligning ONE DAY when you are somehow richer, smarter, thinner, happier, and more popular. The path to all those things is under your feet right now. Which direction are you heading today? Each step, taken mindfully, will lead you to all you desire.
